AI and Ethics in Practice: Podcast Episode

Authors: Prahlad Sarma | 09-February-2025

Our CEO Dr. Ganesan Keerthivasan and our Head of AI Ethics Dr. Tom Tirpak recently sat down with Dr. Tom Ritchie at the University of Warwick to discuss the imperative for Ethical AI, both from a practical business standpoint and a broader societal context.

Key components of Ethical AI include bias, privacy, transparency, and accountability:

“If training data reflects societal bias, AI will perpetuate those biases. And remember that AI is a scaling technology.”

“When we implement a model we need to acknowledge the cultural context of what is considered private, and what are local laws covering privacy and surveillance.”

“Transparency and accountability really go hand-in-hand. Systems that use AI can be difficult to understand, even for the experts…this can make it challenging to hold stakeholders accountable for what systems do.”

Timing is crucial for implementing responsible AI. As Dr. Tirpak explains: “No other technology has been adopted so fast… we’ve got to get to the rudder of this [Generative AI] boat and steer it in a good direction… little things we do today could have a huge impact in the future.”

We also explore the role of standards-setting organizations like IEEE to bridge the gap between policy, which can be slow moving, and the rapid pace of change in AI. As the first and only US organization trained and authorized by the IEEE standards association for AI Ethics, ZealStrat can help position your business as a leader in this growing space. A third-party perspective can be uniquely valuable: our AI Ethics services can mitigate current and future legal risks and improve how you serve your customers.
